How to adapt an org chart template
- Match the top. Replace the top card with whoever actually has final say: owner, CEO, principal, executive director.
- Delete before you add. Remove every role you don’t have, including whole branches (“Delete with team”). What’s left is your real structure.
- Check the spans. If one manager now has more than eight to ten direct reports, consider a team lead. The builder shows the widest span in its stats panel.
- Keep open roles. Dashed cards for positions you are hiring make the chart double as a hiring plan.
- Date it. Add the month to the chart title so nobody mistakes last year’s structure for this one.
Frequently asked questions
Are these organizational chart templates free?
Yes. Every template opens in the free chart maker, where you can rename people, add or remove roles and export to PNG, SVG, PDF or CSV without signing up.
Which template should I start from?
Pick the one closest to your industry and size, then delete what you don’t need. Deleting is faster than building from scratch. For a company under 15 people, the Startup or Small Business template is usually the best fit.
Can I use these in PowerPoint, Word or Google Slides?
Yes. Open the template, edit it, then export a PNG or SVG and insert it into your slide or document. See our guides for PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Google Docs.
What is the difference between an org chart and a hierarchy chart?
They are usually the same thing. “Hierarchy chart” emphasises the layers of authority from top to bottom; an organizational chart can also show flat, matrix or divisional structures.
