How a small business is usually structured
In a small business the owner usually still runs the show, with a manager for each area that has more than a handful of staff. This template covers a 15-person services company: sales, operations and finance each under one manager, all reporting to the owner.
One owner, a few managers
Aim for each manager to have roughly 3–8 direct reports. If the owner has more than eight people reporting directly, it is usually time to appoint a lead.
Part-time and outsourced roles
Include your bookkeeper or IT contractor with a note in the title (for example "Bookkeeper (contract)") so staff know who to go to.
