Google Sheets: build from data
- Put names in column A and each person’s manager in column B (optional tooltip text in column C).
- Select the range, then Insert → Chart.
- In the Chart editor, set Chart type to Organizational chart.
- Copy the chart and paste it into Docs or Slides; choose “Link to spreadsheet” to keep it updatable.
Google Slides: diagram layouts
- Insert → Diagram → Hierarchy.
- Choose depth and colour in the side panel and pick a layout.
- Click boxes to type names; add or remove boxes by copying and adjusting connectors.
Google Docs: drawing
- Insert → Drawing → New.
- Use Shape to add boxes and Line → Elbow connector to join them (connectors snap to the shape’s points and follow when you move boxes).
- Save and close to drop the drawing into the document.
Where Google Docs & Slides falls short
- The Sheets org chart shows names only, with limited styling.
- Slides and Docs charts are hand-drawn and hard to maintain.
- None of them export a high-resolution PDF sized for print.
The faster way for bigger charts
- Paste your Sheets columns (with a header row: Name, Title, Manager) into the HierarchyFlow org chart generator.
- Style and edit in the org chart maker, then Export → PNG.
- In Docs or Slides use Insert → Image → Upload from computer.
