How a it department is usually structured

Most IT departments split into four areas under a CIO or IT director: infrastructure and cloud, the service desk that supports staff day to day, business applications, and information security. Larger organisations add data and architecture teams. This template shows a department of about sixteen.

Security often reports separately

Many organisations have the security lead report to the CIO; some have them report to the CEO or a risk committee so they can escalate without a conflict of interest. Show whichever is true for you.

The service desk is the front door

Put the service desk manager on the chart with their team leads so staff know who to escalate a ticket to.

Mark contractors and managed services

If a managed service provider runs part of the infrastructure, add it as a card with “(MSP)” in the title so the dependency is visible.
